A software energy meter: an existing meter shown as a Shelly EM
A Docker adapter reads an unsupported meter over MQTT and presents it to SolarManager as a hardware Shelly EM. Two days, no new meters to buy.
Project goal
Client: a SolarManager user. We do not name the client. January 2024.
SolarManager works with supported hardware meters such as Shelly EM. The client's meter publishes its data over MQTT and was not supported. The alternative was to buy new meters.
Solution
We built a software twin of the meter:
- A Docker adapter that reads the meter data from MQTT.
- A virtual Shelly EM that SolarManager reads as if it were the hardware device.
Results
- Two days from start to a working integration.
- The client did not need to buy new meters.
